Friday Poll: Best Comic Book Movie or BEST Comic Book Movie?

The list of my Top Five Comic Book Movie Adaptations is a little unconventional, in that there’s only two items on the list. (My list of Top Five Comic Book Movies That Had Great Potential But Really Let Me Down consists of one. I’m looking’ at you, 2008’s The Dark Knight.)

In one corner we have Josie and the Pussycats, from all the way back in 2001. In addition to Rosario Dawson, Rachel Leigh Cook, and Tara Reid portraying the trio of feline rockstars from Riverdale, you have also have Alan Cumming and Parker Posey bringing in some comedy gold. It’s funny, self-aware, and still has a lot of heart. “I still don’t understand why you’re here.” “I’m here because I was in the comic.” “What?” “Nothing.”

In the other corner, we have more recent contender in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. (2010 is “recent”, right?) In my opinion, the Scott Pilgrim movie is probably the most ambitious comic book movie when it comes to translating the visuals of the paper comic page onto the movie screen. The soundtrack and sound effects stay true to the comic series’ thematic mix of classic video games and indie rock band. It’s the most that a movie has ever felt like a comic book to me, rather than a simple re-telling and re-interpretation of a story from a comic.
