Comic book fans have another reason to celebrate this holiday season, because Gal Dacot has been cast as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s still-untitled Man of Steel sequel. Gadot, 28, is known for her performances in the Fast & Furious franchise, and though little is known yet of what role Wonder Woman will play in the film, Newsarama mentions her secret identity of Diana Prince.
Created in 1941, Wonder Woman is one of the most famous superheroes of all time. But unlike her Justice League teammates Batman and Superman, she’s never been featured in a live-action film until now. Fans have been clamoring for a Wonder Woman film for years but been mostly disappointed, as a Joss Whedon-led film project failed to materialize and a television pilot starring Adrienne Palicki was not picked up by the network.
Only earlier this week, Comics Alliance’s Kate Leth posted a comic asking Hollywood why there was no Wonder Woman movie, especially following the box office success of female-driven films The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen. Though we still don’t have a solo Wonder Woman movie–for now–Gadot’s casting is still tremendous, hopeful news.
Director Zack Snyder says:
” “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”
So, what do you think of this casting news? Are you excited for Wonder Woman finally on the big screen?
